Significance
During the secession crisis that followed President Abraham Lincoln’s election in November 1860, many threats were made to Federal troops occupying forts in the South. This was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. The Battle of Shiloh became one of the bloodiest engagements of the war, and the level of violence shocked North and South alike. George B. McClellan led the Union to victory. 3,155 soldiers from the Union were killed. The Confederates surrendered to the Union. From November 15 until December 21, 1864, Union General William T. Sherman led about 60,000 soldiers on a 285-mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. |
